Washington, Jul 26 (VOA) – America’s top infectious disease specialist Anthony Fauci sounded new alarms Sunday about the rebound in coronavirus cases in the country, especially in regions where people have resisted getting vaccinated. despite the rapid spread of the delta variant.
“We are going in the wrong direction,” Fauci told CNN. “Fifty percent of the country is not vaccinated and that is a problem.” Fauci affirmed that “we are all putting ourselves in danger.”
In the United States, hospitalizations and deaths are well below winter figures, but the number of new infections has been rising sharply in parts of the country where skepticism about the need to get vaccinated, the safety of vaccines and resistance to government suggestions to inoculate remain powerful.
More than 51,000 new infections were registered in the United States on Saturday, an increase of 172% over the total of two weeks ago, and more than 250 deaths are occurring daily.
The government says that more than 162 million Americans are fully vaccinated, corresponding to 49% of the country and almost 60% of adults.
On the other hand, surveys show that up to 80% of those not vaccinated say that they will not be vaccinated or are not likely to do so despite the insistence of the authorities.
Many conservative politicians who previously took a wary stance toward vaccines or said getting inoculated was a personal decision are now expressing frustration with those who don’t get vaccinated.
Alabama Republican Gov. Kay Ivey said last week that the unvaccinated “are choosing a horrible lifestyle.”
Another Republican governor, Asa Hutchinson of Arkansas, has long encouraged people to get vaccinated, but his state remains one of the lowest inoculation rates. Two teens died of COVID-19 in Arkansas this month.
“Those are red flags,” Hutchinson told CNN, although he acknowledged that “resistance (to inoculations) has grown stronger.”
However, the governor expressed optimism that the unvaccinated will change their minds.
“People can change their resistance. We must concentrate on that, ”he said.
Fauci said those vaccinated are “highly protected,” even against the delta variant, but despite this the rate of vaccinations in the United States has fallen by more than 80% since mid-April.
Some cities, like Los Angeles in the west and San Luis, in the center of the country, have imposed new orders to wear masks in closed public spaces, even for those vaccinated, and other cities are considering similar directives.
