Millionaire investment will provide the agricultural sector with technological tools to improve its services

San José, Jul 19 (elmundo.cr) – With the aim of improving attention to agricultural production after extreme weather events, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG), the National Institute of Agricultural Innovation and Technology (INTA) and the Regional Agricultural Health Organization (OIRSA), made investments that will improve services in the agricultural sector throughout the country.

During a visit this Monday to the facilities of the INTA Laboratory Center in Sabana Sur, the President of the Republic, Carlos Alvarado and the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Renato Alvarado, confirmed the new technological tools recently acquired to make available to the different regions of the country.

It is about the purchase of drones, smartphones and laboratory equipment, which will modernize the services to the agricultural sector, to guarantee the continuity and improvement of the economic activity of producers throughout the national territory.

The President of the Republic, Carlos Alvarado, thanked the entities for their work and the drive towards national production, while pointing out that the government’s commitment is to generate and support the producer with the necessary tools that adapt to current times, allowing the farmer to continue working with optimal conditions.

“This support seeks to increase the productivity of crops and reduce the environmental impact,” said the president in his visit after indicating that technologies also allow new generations to get involved and learn more and more about the agricultural sector as an important activity for the economy national.

For his part, the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Renato Alvarado, said that these investments are important since, “we are convinced that agriculture must adapt to climate change and new technologies. We can no longer make excuses, “he said.

“We must make innovation, research and technology available to small and medium-sized farmers, optimizing resources and putting these tools at the service of the sector. That is the route to develop agriculture and bring it up to date, “said the chief after thanking the support received by OIRSA.

In detail, with an investment close to ₡ 300 million, equivalent to 36.5% of its operating budget for the 2020 period, INTA was able to provide its laboratories with infrastructure and modern equipment to generate high-quality results in greater quantity, and thus improve the research processes and the services it provides to producers, which includes:

Molecular Biology Laboratory. Developed with equipment to produce DNA / RNA analysis for both agricultural and livestock development, as well as microbiology. The complex is reopened with the donation of an agreement with CHINA to provide better equipment and instruments.

Plant Protection Laboratory. It includes the Entomology (pests), Phytopathology (Fungi, viruses and bacteria) and Nematology (Nematodes) laboratories. The change of facilities and equipment will allow to produce results more quickly on pests and diseases that affect crops.

Soil microbiology and biological inputs. This area is in charge of evaluating the quality of organic fertilizers and the purity and quality of the biological inputs used for the biological control of pests and diseases; as well as some contaminants of human importance.

Soil and foliar laboratory. In this laboratory, more than ₡ 150 million were invested in equipment for plasma analysis, which will triple the number of samples that can be analyzed.

Animal nutrition. Modern equipment was acquired to perform quality analysis of the forages, necessary for a less dependence on imported corn concentrates.

Drones These are 10 state-of-the-art aircraft, with an investment of almost ₡ 74.5 million by the MAG, to promote the use of new information and communication technologies, in an effort to increase the productivity of crops and reduce the impact environmental.
